SARAWAK has installed 215 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the state as of September 2026, as efforts continue to expand charging infrastructure and encourage the adoption of cleaner transport.
Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the chargers comprised both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) types to improve accessibility and convenience for EV users.
He said this during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
According to Lee, EV adoption in Sarawak is gradually gaining momentum, supported by government initiatives, a wider selection of EV models and the expansion of charging facilities.
Citing Road Transport Department (JPJ) data, he said 1,334 electric cars are registered in Sarawak between 2021 and 2026, out of 56,452 motorcars registered during the same period.
This accounted for about 2.36 per cent of total motorcar registrations, equivalent to approximately one electric car for every 42 motorcars registered.
Lee said the continued expansion of charging infrastructure would help make EV ownership more accessible and convenient for the public.
He added that growing EV adoption supported Sarawak’s broader aspirations to develop a low-carbon transport sector and contributed to Malaysia’s transition towards sustainable mobility.
