Government yet to decide on Balingian upgrade proposal to full district

By Eszryeen Kris · 19 Oct, 19:05 MYT

THE Sarawak Government has yet to make a decision on a proposal to upgrade Balingian Sub-District to a full district.

Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Sri John Sikie Tayai said the proposal, raised by the assemblyman for Balingian, would need to be considered based on several criteria for the establishment of a district.

“The criteria include the boundaries and size of the administrative area involved, as well as the population and number of villages that would be affected by the proposed upgrade,” he said.

Sikie said the financial implications, particularly operating costs and staffing requirements, were also among the factors that needed to be considered.

Other criteria included the area’s potential to contribute significantly to economic activities and its ability to generate satisfactory revenue through official activities

He said these factors formed part of the considerations for establishing a district.
