BINTULU : The Muaythai Premier Sarawak Cup is likely to return to Bintulu for its 11th edition next year, with preparations for the 2027 SEA Games in Kuching among the factors influencing the Sarawak Muaythai Association’s (PMNS) plans.
PMNS’ President, Jumaat Ibrahim said the association would ideally like to take the tournament to another location, but would have to consider the circumstances and sporting calendar before making a decision.
“For next year, God-willing, it will take place in Bintulu again because preparations for the SEA Games in Kuching are very intensive, with less than a year remaining,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Jumaat said the Premier Cup had become an established event in Bintulu, with its reputation extending beyond Sarawak to the national and international levels.
“The Premier Cup is no longer unfamiliar to Bintulu. People throughout Sarawak know it, and its reputation extends beyond Sarawak to the national and international levels,” he said.
He described the tournament as one of Bintulu’s attractions, adding that it could contribute to the town’s tourism appeal by drawing participants and visitors.
Jumaat said the 10th edition, held at NAIM Street Mall Paragon, had concluded successfully with the competition running smoothly and no unwanted injuries reported.
He thanked the tournament’s sponsors, including BBC Construction Sdn Bhd, Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad and NAIM Street Mall Paragon, among others, for their contributions towards the successful organisation of the tournament.
Jumaat also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its continued encouragement and support in helping PMNS promote muaythai and organise the annual competition.
He hoped the sponsors would continue supporting the association beyond the latest edition, allowing it to further develop the sport and expand its reach.
“We hope the sponsors will not support us only this time, but will continue to give encouragement and support so that the association can move forward and develop talent not only at state and national levels, but especially internationally,” he said.
