I wasn’t informed, says Bersatu rep over Selangor govt pact
Syazwani, widely seen as not aligned with the current Bersatu leadership, said she was caught off guard to learn that negotiations with PH were at the final stages and that the pact would be signed before the state budget is tabled.
The Permatang assemblyman told FMT that all Bersatu assemblymen should have been consulted beforehand.
This is especially true if the deal would bind them in terms of political commitments, including supporting the state government or budget, she said.
“(The Selangor Bersatu leadership) shouldn’t have made the decision unilaterally expecting assemblymen to fall in line and accept what was decided on their behalf,” said the daughter of Umno’s former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar.
Syazwani said she has no qualms about working with the government of the day if it benefits the people, but the opposition’s role as a check and balance must continue.
“Working together for the people should not mean giving up our role as the opposition,” said the first-term assemblyman.
Earlier today, menteri besar Amirudin Shari said Bersatu assemblymen in the state would be signing a pact with the state government before the state budget is tabled, with terms being finalised.
This comes amid heightening tensions between PH and Barisan Nasional, a key partner in both the federal and Selangor governments.
Bersatu, on the other hand, has fallen out with PAS, which currently chairs the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
The 56-member Selangor assembly comprises 32 PH assemblymen, followed by Bersatu (11), PAS (10), BN (two) and an independent.
