Contract doctors’ group hails permanent posts offer
Contract doctors protesting the lack of permanent posts five years ago while working during the movement control order imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic. PETALING JAYA: A doctors' group tonight described as courageous the move to offer permanent positions next year for more than 9,000 contract doctors in the public healthcare service.
In a statement, contract doctors' group Hartal Doktor Kontrak (HDK) said the announcement by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim when tabling the 2027 budget “marked a significant turning point for Malaysia’s medical workforce”.
HDK said thousands of doctors have endured years of uncertainty since 2016, while many others have left public service in search of better opportunities and a more secure future.
“For those who have spent years advocating for change, this announcement offers a long-awaited glimmer of hope.
“It takes courage and leadership to move beyond a system that has persisted for a decade and commit to a fairer future for our doctors.”
HDK, which previously organised walkouts to demand permanent jobs for contract doctors, said while they were grateful, they were also cautiously optimistic.
The true measure of this commitment lies in its implementation, transparency and tangible impact, it said.
Clear timelines, fair eligibility criteria and proper recognition of doctors who have served for years under contract would be essential to ensure no one is left behind, it said.
HDK said after 10 years, the contract doctors had waited long enough and they deserved more than promises.
“The announcement has given us hope. Now, let the implementation give that hope real meaning.”
