False robbery report lands man in trouble

By Gretta Bala · 18 Oct, 17:20 MYT

MIRI : A 29-year-old man is under investigation for falsely claiming he was robbed of a mobile phone and a motorcycle key in Lutong Baru.

Miri police said investigations found that the alleged robbery had never occurred, with the complainant subsequently admitting that his police report was false.

The man lodged the report at 6.37pm on Oct 17, claiming he had been robbed by a man armed with an iron rod outside a laundry shop at about 3am the same day.

He alleged that the suspect had snatched his Honor mobile phone, taken a motorcycle key belonging to his friend and fled in an old white Proton Saga Aeroback.

However, the Criminal Investigation Division at Miri District Police Headquarters uncovered inconsistencies in his account, prompting further inquiries.

Police said their investigations subsequently established that the reported robbery had not taken place.

The investigating officer later lodged a separate police report over the provision of false information to a public servant.

The man is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of six months, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
