It looks like ‘The Batman: Part II’ has hit another setback, with production temporarily halted after director Matt Reeves stepped away to attend to a family matter.
DC Studios confirmed the pause earlier this week, saying production on the highly anticipated sequel had been temporarily suspended while Reeves focuses on his family. No further details about the matter have been disclosed.
“Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon,” the studio said in a statement.
Reeves’ temporary departure comes just months after filming finally got under way in the UK. Principal photography began in London in June, with production also taking place in other locations including Liverpool and at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden.
The sequel has already faced several delays. Originally scheduled for release in October 2025, it was subsequently pushed to October 2026 and then October 2027. In July this year, Warner Bros moved its release date again, with ‘The Batman: Part II’ now scheduled to hit cinemas on February 18, 2028. It is not yet known whether the latest production pause will affect that date.
The film follows the success of ‘The Batman’, which was released in 2022 and grossed more than US$770 million worldwide. Robert Pattinson is returning as Bruce Wayne/Batman, alongside Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, better known as the Penguin.
The sequel will also introduce several new faces to Gotham, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch. Their roles have largely been kept under wraps, although Stan has been reported to be playing Harvey Dent.
Reeves, who co-wrote, directed and produced the first film, is also returning in the same capacities for the sequel. Plot details remain closely guarded, although the filmmaker has previously indicated that the new film will explore Bruce Wayne more deeply, following the first instalment’s stronger focus on Batman.
