Take stronger stance with Indonesia over haze issue, MCA urges govt
PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya is urged to take a tougher stance with Indonesia over the recurring trans-boundary haze, saying action at source is better than another year of diplomatic excuses.
MCA urban affairs bureau chairman Tan Gim Tuan said the haze was not merely Malaysia's problem as it destroys forests, peatland, wildlife and biodiversity and endangers Indonesians in affected areas.
He said Indonesian authorities have a responsibility to investigate the fires and take decisive enforcement action, regardless if the perpetrators are Indonesian or Malaysian-linked companies.
"Indonesia should impose the strongest penalties permitted under its laws, including shutting down or seizing offending plantations. If necessary, legislation should be strengthened to enable such action.
"Those who deliberately start fires to cut land-clearing costs need to receive a loud and unmistakable message," he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 8).
Tan, who is also the Selangor MCA liaison committee chairman, said Malaysia's healthcare system could face additional pressure as more people suffer from haze-related illnesses.
He also cited aviation safety concerns and poor visibility at Senai International Airport, which delayed at least five flights and forced diversions to KLIA and Singapore's Changi Airport.
He said Malaysia must leverage the Asean Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution as it provides a framework for cooperation and controlling fire sources.
A total of 38 areas recorded Air Pollutant Index (API) readings at an unhealthy level as of 4pm on Thursday.
