Tourism-related economic opportunities through heritage trail initiatives
SARAWAK’S heritage trail initiatives are expected to create tourism-related economic opportunities for local communities while preserving the state’s cultural and historical heritage.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the initiatives could encourage community participation in homestays, handicrafts, local food, community guiding and cultural activities.
“At the same time, the development of heritage trails can enhance an area’s appeal as a tourism destination.
“Through this approach, heritage preservation can not only strengthen community identity but also potentially contribute to local socioeconomic development,” he said.
He was responding to Allan Siden Gramong (GPS-Machan) during question andanswer session on Wednesday (Oct 14).
Snowdan said the ministry is developing the Betong Heritage Trail, covering Betong, Saratok, Pusa and Kabong, through engagement sessions and site visits with local communities and stakeholders.
The initiative involves identifying and documenting historical sites, oral traditions, cultural practices and community memories.
He said local communities also played an important role in verifying historical information and ensuring that documented heritage accurately reflected their identity and experiences.
“This approach is important because it positions communities as custodians and inheritors of local heritage,” he said.
The documentation process is supported by historical research and collaboration with the Sarawak Museum Department, Sarawak Council for Native Customs and Traditions and relevant ethnic associations.
Snowdan also highlighted the Miri Heritage Trail, launched in 2025 following two years of research and stakeholder engagement.
The trail showcases Miri’s petroleum industry history, World War II heritage, local legends and the development of communities that shaped the city’s identity.
Meanwhile, the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHE) initiative focuses on four components — Kampung Heritage, Historical Business Heritage, Riverfront Heritage and Historical Monuments Heritage.
He said the initiative aims to identify heritage assets and develop them into tourism products and services, supported by a dedicated microsite providing information on Old Kuching’s heritage attractions.
Other documentation efforts include the publication of The Revival of Songket and Keringkam Sarawak: Honouring Datuk Amar Juma’ani and Kampung Warisan Bandar Raya Kuching.
The Sarawak Craft Council (SCC) has also documented traditional crafts, including Keringkam and Gendang Melayu.
Snowdan said the ministry also supported non-governmental organisations through the Sarawak Heritage, Arts and Culture Facilitation Fund, including an initiative to publish a book on Kanowit’s history.
