Black soldier fly programme boosts incomes

By Sharifah Nong Jasima · 20 Oct, 18:01 MYT

PARTICIPANTS in a black soldier fly (BSF) industry development programme earned an average additional monthly income of RM1,100 each from selling larvae and eggs to anchor companies, said Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

The Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development said the programme attracted 364 participants across 15 districts, exceeding its target of 300 by 21 per cent.

“The outcome shows encouraging revenue to the participants with an average additional monthly income RM1,100.00 per participant from selling BSF larvae and eggs to the anchor companies,” he said in his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.

Dr Rundi said 20 participants were selected to undergo a three-month Coaching and Entrepreneurship Programme.

“The one-off initiative, titled ‘Empowering the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Industry: Sustainable Protein Production and Waste Management’, was conducted by Malaysia Bioeconomy Corporation,” he said.

He said it promoted sustainable feed production, organic waste management and bioeconomy entrepreneurship.
