Cops nab couple after hour-long Melaka chase, seize meth

Melaka Tengah police chief Halim Abas said a police team detained the 39-year-old man and 32-year-old woman, who were driving a Proton Saga, at 7.20pm.

"At 6.20pm yesterday, the suspects were spotted driving suspiciously near an apartment block in Tengkera. When ordered to stop for checks, the driver sped off and drove dangerously, even going against traffic on several main roads in Melaka," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Halim said the suspects abandoned their vehicle at a dead end near a mosque in Kampung Sungai Putat and fled on foot before being detained.

Police found a transparent plastic packet of suspected methamphetamine in the vehicle. Preliminary urine tests on both suspects came back positive for methamphetamine.

Background checks showed both individuals had criminal records: the man had eight previous cases, including seven drug-related offences. The woman had 11 previous cases, including 10 drug-related offences.

Halim said both suspects had been remanded for four days from today to facilitate investigations.

A video circulated on social media yesterday showed three police patrol cars pursuing a vehicle driving against traffic near the Pantai Hospital intersection in Ayer Keroh.
