KUCHING: A 20-year-old man suspected of being involved in the arson attack on a well-known convenience store in Jalan Green Road here was remanded for one day by the Magistrates’ Court today to assist police investigations.
Magistrate Nureina Syafika Mohd Najib allowed the remand application from today until October 10 under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which deals with mischief by fire or explosive substances with intent to destroy a house or other property.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday (Oct. 8) and brought to court today for the remand application.
The case is among several arson incidents involving convenience stores reported in various districts across Sarawak.
Meanwhile, another suspect, a 21-year-old man arrested on October 5, was brought before the court for a second remand application in connection with the same case.
However, Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan rejected the police application to extend his remand by seven days, thus it is understood that the suspect has been released from remand.
In a statement today, Sarawak Acting Police Commissioner, DCP Saifullizan Ishak said police had arrested five local men to assist investigations into the case and were tracking down eight other individuals believed to have information related to the incident.
He urged members of the public with relevant information to assist the investigation by contacting investigating officer, Inspector Tan Chiang Fook, at 018-262 8805 or by visiting the nearest police station.
Saifullizan also advised the public against making or spreading speculation that could interfere with the investigation.
All of the suspects are currently represented by counsels, Daniel Ling Chok Luk and Vanessa Yii Tze Long.
