HPTN 2026 Heads To Sarawak, Putting AI, Innovation & Technical Careers In The Spotlight | WeirdKaya

By Jin Wen Chan · 19 Oct, 10:39 MYT

When people hear the words “technical profession”, engineering and construction might be the first things that come to mind.

But today, the field stretches much further.

From artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to science, architecture and innovation, technical professionals are increasingly working across areas that are shaping how Malaysia builds, develops and prepares for the future.

This broader picture will take centre stage at National Technical Profession Day, or Hari Profesion Teknikal Negara (HPTN) 2026.

The Ministry of Works (KKR) and Public Works Department Malaysia (JKR) officially kicked off the road towards this year’s celebration with its pre-launch on 8 September 2026.

More than just engineering and construction

HPTN is an annual national platform aimed at recognising and elevating technical professions for their contribution to infrastructure development, modernisation and Malaysia’s wider progress.

However, one of the key messages for HPTN 2026 is that technical careers are no longer limited to what the public may traditionally associate with the field.

The celebration covers disciplines ranging from construction and engineering to science, architecture, technology and innovation.

This is especially relevant as technology continues to change the way technical work is carried out.

Artificial intelligence, for example, is being positioned as a tool that can support professionals by improving capabilities, productivity and innovation rather than replacing the people behind the work.

That message forms part of this year’s theme, “Profesion Teknikal Pemacu Kelestarian”, or “Technical Professions Driving Sustainability”.

The theme highlights how technical expertise, combined with technology, creativity and innovation, can contribute towards more sustainable development and strengthen Malaysia’s competitiveness.

HPTN heads to Sarawak for the first time

HPTN 2026 will also mark an important milestone for the celebration.

This year is its third edition, and for the first time, the national celebration is being expanded to the state level, with Sarawak serving as the host state.

The event will be organised through collaboration between the Federal Government and the Sarawak State Government.

Over the two days, HPTN 2026 will bring together government agencies, higher education institutions, industry partners and technical experts under one roof.

Visitors can expect conferences, technical seminars and knowledge-sharing sessions alongside exhibitions and interactive activities.

The programmes will highlight developments and ideas across different technical fields, while creating opportunities for participants to exchange expertise and learn how new technologies are being applied in the real world.

For instance, Malaysia’s first astronaut, Dato’ Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, was invited to give visitors the chance to hear from one of the country’s most recognisable figures in science and technology.

Getting more young Malaysians interested in technical careers

Another major focus of HPTN 2026 is Malaysia’s younger generation.

Young people aged between 15 and 35, including secondary school students, university students, TVET and STEM learners, graduates and young professionals, are among the key audiences for this year’s campaign.

Rather than only telling them what a technical career looks like, HPTN hopes to give them opportunities to experience these fields more directly through exhibitions, interactive activities and exposure to potential career pathways.

The goal is to help younger Malaysians see just how wide the technical profession has become and the different roles they could potentially pursue in the future.

With AI and technology continuing to develop, future technical professionals may find themselves working in areas that look very different from the conventional image of the sector.

At the same time, the fundamentals remain important: technical knowledge, creativity, problem-solving and the ability to turn ideas into solutions that benefit society.

A platform connecting government, academia and industry

HPTN also acts as a meeting point between different parts of Malaysia’s technical ecosystem.

By bringing government agencies, universities, educators and industry players together, the event creates room for knowledge sharing and discussions around the skills, technologies and expertise Malaysia will need moving forward.

This includes looking at how technical professions can continue supporting infrastructure development while adapting to new tools such as AI and emerging technologies.

Ultimately, HPTN 2026 aims to show that technical professions are not standing still.

They are evolving alongside technology and innovation, while continuing to play an important role in Malaysia’s development.

HPTN 2026 will take place on 1 and 2 December 2026 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), Sarawak .
