KUCHING: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has proposed incorporating Miri’s rich natural and petroleum heritage into the architectural design of the city’s upgraded airport terminal to reflect its unique identity.
He suggested featuring elements inspired by Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park, both recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, alongside the iconic Grand Old Lady, Miri’s first oil well which symbolises the city’s historical roots as the birthplace of Malaysia’s petroleum industry.
Lee put forward the proposal during a project briefing by the Public Works Department (PWD) Malaysia team at the Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) office in Bangunan Baitulmakmur here today (Oct 9).
According to a press statement, the briefing concluded a three-day engagement and working visit programme initiated and coordinated by MOTS.
During the briefing, the project team presented “Gateway to the Highlands” as the proposed design theme, drawing inspiration from Sarawak’s ethnic cultures, particularly the heritage, traditional craftsmanship and artistic elements of the Orang Ulu communities.
Lee welcomed the concept, noting that Miri serves as an important gateway to the highlands and interior regions of Northern Sarawak.
He also called for the incorporation of cultural elements representing Sarawak’s diverse ethnic communities to ensure the upgraded airport reflects the state’s unity in diversity.
Lee stressed that the airport should serve not only as a gateway to Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage but also as a showcase of Miri’s unique natural attractions and historical significance.
“Our airport should not simply be a place where passengers arrive and depart. It should also be a place where visitors can discover what makes Miri and Sarawak special,” he said.
Lee expressed hope that the federal Ministry of Transport (MOTM) and Public Works Department (PWD) Malaysia would ensure the appointed interior design team undertakes site visits to Miri Airport and other relevant locations across Sarawak.
He stressed it was important for designers to gain first-hand insights into the airport’s surroundings, local communities and cultural heritage to develop an authentic design that captures the distinct identity of Miri and Sarawak.
The three-day programme, held from Oct 7 to 9, featured engagement sessions with local cultural associations, artists and craftsmen in Miri, followed by study visits to the Sarawak Cultural Village and Borneo Cultures Museum.
Lee also expressed appreciation to the federal Ministry of Transport, PWD Malaysia, Malaysia Airports, local cultural associations, artists, craftsmen and all participants for their contributions and cooperation throughout the programme.
