PADAWAN : Three motorists were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol during an operation targeting drink-driving activities in the district.
Codenamed ‘Ops Mabuk’, the operation was conducted by the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division along Jalan Tan Sri Sulaiman Daud and Jalan Batu Kawa from 11.30pm on Oct 17 to 5.30am on Oct 18.
Four motorists underwent preliminary breathalyser tests using the SD2+ device, with all four allegedly testing positive for alcohol.
However, further screening using the EBA II device found that only three had alcohol levels exceeding the prescribed limit, while the other motorist tested negative.
Padawan police said the three motorists were detained for investigation under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Under the provision, first-time offenders convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol face a fine of up to RM30,000, imprisonment of up to two years and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least two years.
Repeat offenders could face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years and disqualification from holding a driving licence for up to 10 years.
A total of 47 vehicles and 51 individuals were inspected.
Police also issued 36 summonses for various traffic offences, including failure to display road tax, expired licences, unregistered taxis and failure to comply with motor vehicle licensing regulations.
Similar operations would continue to ensure compliance with traffic laws and safeguard the safety of all road users.
