Poverty, punishment and compassion collide in Kuantan Nescafe theft case
THEFT is theft, regardless of how small or insignificant the amount that was stolen.
But at times, this certainty comes into doubt when it involves a poor mother attempting to put food on the table.
In a video post on X, a woman could be seen crying as she tried to flee on her motorcycle, being surrounded by a group of people.
Most heartbreaking was the fact that she had a frightened child, who cried alongside her. The visual was both saddening yet informative.
According to netizen @Y_X_sucks who posted the video, all she did was stole several packets of Nescafe.

The alleged theft may seem straightforward. But beyond the footage lies a question that deserves more attention than the act itself.
If a mother steals because she cannot afford to feed her children, is it the failure of the mother or failure of society to provide for her?
Netizen @Y_X_sucks added that the theft occurred at Pokok Nangka, Kuantan.
Note that the wholesaler and retailer has already issued a statement on Facebook, calling for netizens to refrain from further commenting or spreading the issue.
This incident bears similarities to a recent case in 2026 where a man stole seven packets of Nescafe worth a total of RM105.70 at a 24-hour convenience store in Taman Cheng Indah, Melaka.
The man, identified as Nazarudin Ahmad, was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine.
Nazarudin was ordered to be jailed for a day, effective from the date of his conviction, and pay a RM2,000 fine.
On another note, the law must remain blind, treating every person equally regardless of their circumstances.
But humanity asks us to look beyond the offence and consider the person behind it. Forgiveness does not mean condoning theft, nor does compassion mean abandoning accountability.
It means recognising that a moment of wrongdoing should not erase a person’s dignity, especially when innocent children are caught in the middle. —Oct 11, 2026
