Sarawak strongman Bonnie Bunyau delivers Malaysia’s second Asian Games gold

By Harry Izzdin · 20 Oct, 17:49 MYT

KUCHING : Another gold. Another title defended. And once again, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin remains the man to beat in the men’s up to 72kg powerlifting category.

The Sarawak powerhouse retained his Asian Para Games crown in Nagoya with a commanding 225kg lift, comfortably ahead of China’s Zhang Pingkang on 212kg and Iran’s Mohsen Bakhtiar on 208kg.

With the gold already secured, Bonnie went after something bigger – his own Games record.

The 27-year-old loaded 231kg for his final attempt, one kilogram above the 230kg mark he set at Hangzhou 2023.

The record stayed intact, but the title was never in danger.

Bonnie’s victory delivered Malaysia its second gold medal of the Games – with a firm grip on the 72kg throne.
