Two shootings in two days: After JB, high-speed chaos ends in gunfire in PJ
WITHIN 48 hours, two major Malaysian cities witnessed shockingly similar violent confrontations between police patrol units and fleeing suspects.
On Oct 8, a high-speed pursuit erupted near Jalan Gertak Merah close to the Johor Zoo. A driver attempting to evade capture dangerously rammed into multiple surrounding vehicles.
Police officers opened fire to neutralise the threat, striking and injuring the male driver before taking him into custody. Narcotics were subsequently uncovered at the scene.
Just a day later, on Oct 9, chaos broke out in Petaling Jaya along Persiaran Mahogani.
A man in his 30s driving a Proton Wira panicked upon spotting a patrol unit, triggering a chase during which he collided with several vehicles.
The suspect was apprehended after being hit by police gunfire, while a police officer was also injured during the operation and received hospital treatment.
“The suspect suffered injuries after being hit by shots fired by police,” Police Chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat was quoted as saying in a statement today.
Upon inspection, police discovered drugs and a replica pistol on the suspect. Background checks revealed that the suspect has 10 prior records, including six drug-related cases and four criminal offences.
A urine test has yet to be conducted, as the suspect remains under medical care at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
The case in Petaling Jaya is currently being investigated under Sections 186, 279, and 307 of the Penal Code, Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, and Sections 39B and 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the Petaling Jaya IPD Operations Room at 03-7966 2222.
In Johor Bahru or JB, state Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad, confirmed the incident. He said the shooting involved police personnel and a man.
Checks at the scene by local news reporters revealed the car driven by the man was still there. The area had been cordoned off by police.
Witnesses said that, in the incident about 2pm, the driver of the vehicle was hit by gunfire. — Oct 10, 2026
