Bank Negara warns of scammers impersonating governor, top officials

By FMT Reporters · 14 Oct, 09:39 MYT

Bank Negara Malaysia urged netizens to report suspicious content to the relevant social media platform, the central bank or the SC to help prevent its spread. PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has urged Malaysians to be on the alert for scammers utilising deepfake technology to impersonate its senior officials, including governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour.

In a statement, BNM maintained that the central bank and Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) do not promote or recommend private investment schemes.

It urged the public to verify information received about investment schemes with official sources before making transactions.

The central bank has set up a portal with examples of deepfake content involving BNM published by scammers. Members of the public can also check its financial consumer alert list or the SC's investor alert list for schemes or companies flagged by authorities.

"Users may also verify whether an entity is authorised to offer financial or investment products through BNMLink or the SC's investment checker portal.

"Report suspicious content to the relevant social media platform, or alert BNM or the SC, to help prevent its spread," it added.
