Chukpai urges swift task force on Bakun resettlement issues

By Rasheeqa Bahida · 14 Oct, 13:38 MYT

THE establishment of a special task force to address Bakun resettlement issues should be expedited.

Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon said the initiative would help address longstanding matters involving the Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS) in Sungai Asap and native customary rights (NCR) land surrounding the Bakun Dam.

He expressed appreciation for Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s openness and concern in personally hearing the communities’ grievances during a meeting on Feb 25 this year.

“During the meeting, the Premier suggested that a special committee or task force be established to examine these issues,” he said.

He said this when debating the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026, at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Wednesday (Oct 14).

Kennedy hoped the relevant ministries and agencies would expedite the task force’s formation, with the involvement of community representatives to ensure fair, comprehensive and lasting solutions.
