MIRI : Anaesthesiologists play a critical role in safeguarding patients before, during and after surgery, a message underscored at Hospital Miri’s National Anaesthesia Day 2026 celebration on Saturday.
Held at the main lobby of Block B, the event aimed to raise public awareness of anaesthesiology and its contribution to patient care, challenging the common perception that anaesthesiologists are simply doctors who put patients to sleep.
The celebration carried the theme “Before, During and Beyond Surgery”, highlighting the specialty’s broader responsibilities in preparing patients for surgery, maintaining their safety and stability during procedures, and supporting their recovery afterwards.
Anaesthesiologists also play important roles in pain management, emergency medicine, critical care and resuscitation.
In his welcoming remarks, Hospital Miri Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Dr Mustaffa Kamil Zainal Abidin, said the theme reflected the comprehensive nature of the specialty and its central role in safe surgical care.
“Although we often work behind the scenes, our role is at the heart of every safe surgical journey,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the organising committee, sponsors and healthcare team members for their contributions, dedication and teamwork, particularly in managing the demands of hospital care.
The celebration was officially opened by Dr Nur Natasya Sherimim, Deputy Director (Medical) II, who represented the Hospital Miri director.
In her opening address, she emphasised that anaesthesia services extend beyond ensuring patients remain safe during surgery to encompass care throughout the entire surgical process.
She also commended the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care for its continued commitment to delivering quality patient care.
The programme featured educational booths showcasing the work of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Operating Theatre, Acute Pain Service and Organ Donation services, giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about these areas and their contributions to hospital care.
A Zumba session was also included to encourage participation and promote an active, engaging atmosphere during the celebration.
Through the annual observance, Hospital Miri sought to strengthen public understanding of anaesthesiology and recognise the contributions of healthcare professionals whose work is often carried out behind the scenes.
The event served as a reminder that safe surgery depends not only on the procedure itself but also on the expertise, vigilance and coordinated efforts of the teams caring for patients at every stage of their treatment.
