BAU: A 30-year-old local man was arrested in connection with a break-in and theft involving RM4,700 in cash at a business premises in Bau town.
The case was reported to Bau police on Oct 6 after the complainant discovered that cash from sales kept in the cashier’s drawer was missing.
Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said investigations found that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed an unidentified man entering the premises through the back door at night.
“The suspect allegedly switched off the CCTV system before proceeding to the cashier’s counter.
“Acting on intelligence, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Bau district police headquarters arrested the man at about 1.35pm on Oct 15,” he said in a statement.
Mohd Haide also added that initial questioning indicated that the suspect had admitted to being involved in the case.
“He was also believed to have fled to the MJC area in Batu Kawa for about a week to avoid detection by police.
“During the operation, police seized several items believed to be linked to the investigation,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Sections 380 and 447 of the Penal Code for theft in a building and criminal trespass respectively.
Police are scheduled to apply for a remand order at the Bau Magistrates’ Court today to facilitate further investigations, including determining whether the suspect may be linked to other cases.
Mohd Haide advised business owners to ensure that their premises were properly secured, install appropriate security systems and avoid leaving large amounts of cash unattended.
