KUCHING : Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) is expected to develop another gas well by mid-2027 to supply the combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Miri, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said PETROS would also drill an exploration well in Kuala Baram, which had encouraging potential for gas production.
“These efforts are part of Sarawak’s strategy to strengthen its energy supply and support industrial growth,” he said in his address at the parade held in conjunction with the 80th official birthday of the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Padang Merdeka here today (Oct 10).
Abang Johari said Sarawak was also developing strategic energy infrastructure to ensure its natural gas resources could support economic growth across the state.
He said PETROS was developing a 65-km gas pipeline to transport gas from Kidurong to Samalaju Industrial Park near Bintulu.
Under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, the state’s oil and gas resources would be channelled from production centres in Bintulu to other areas to stimulate wider economic development, he added.
Abang Johari said Sarawak’s renewable energy resources, particularly hydropower, also gave the state an advantage in attracting investors from industries requiring large amounts of clean and competitively priced electricity.
He added that onshore oil production had also shown encouraging potential, with the Adong Kechil West field near Marudi producing 800 barrels of oil per day.
Based on current oil prices, he said production from the single well was worth about RM8 million a month, or RM96 million annually.
He said the field had further potential, with additional wells possible in the area.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said PETROS had recently signed an agreement with Oslo-based partner Hoegh Evi to develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Tanjung Embang as part of the Kuching Low Carbon Hub.
He said these developments reflected Sarawak’s efforts to strengthen its energy infrastructure and maximise the value of its natural resources to support the state’s economic transformation.
