‘Please Ask For Receipts’ — M’sian Boss Shares How Staff Stole Sales Money | WeirdKaya
“Do you need a receipt?”
If your usual answer is “No, thanks”, this Malaysian business owner’s experience might make you think twice.
Taking to Threads, the owner alleged that a staff member had been pocketing customers’ cash payments without entering their orders into the system.
And according to the owner, the employee had memorised the menu prices to pull it off.
Knew the prices, but allegedly skipped recording orders

In the post , the owner explained how the alleged scheme worked using a simple example: a caramel latte priced at RM13.50 and a tuna sandwich costing RM4.50.
The total? RM18.
However, instead of keying the order into the system, the employee allegedly calculated the bill from memory and collected the customer’s payment.
The owner claimed the staff member also kept RM1, RM5 and RM10 notes, along with coins, in their pocket to provide change.
“They would give customers change using their own money. Then, the sales money would go into their pocket,” the owner alleged.
To a customer, it could have looked like an ordinary transaction. But according to the owner’s account, the order was never recorded.

When a commenter asked whether the outlet had CCTV, the owner said it did.
However, they explained that they did not have time to review the footage every day.
What eventually raised suspicion was the gap between the stock being used and the cash sales recorded.
“There was a lot of stock running out, but cash sales didn’t even reach RM500. That was when I checked the CCTV,” the owner wrote.
The post did not specify how long the alleged theft had been happening or the total amount involved.
‘Please ask for your receipt’

Following the experience, the owner urged customers to make a habit of taking their receipts, or requesting one if it was not offered.
“So I’d like to ask everyone for help. Please get into the habit of taking your receipt, or asking for one if the staff don’t give it to you,” they wrote.
The appeal sparked suggestions from other Threads users on how businesses could tighten their procedures.
Netizens suggest stricter order tracking
One commenter suggested introducing self-ordering kiosks or app-based ordering, leaving staff to focus on preparing food and drinks.
Another proposed making it compulsory for every order to appear in the system before the kitchen or barista could prepare it.
They also suggested checking stock against sales daily and monitoring CCTV footage.
Meanwhile, a commenter who described themselves as a senior outlet supervisor urged customers to be alert when told that the system was down and no receipt could be issued.
For this owner, the request to customers was simple: before walking away with your food or drink, remember to ask for that little slip of paper.
