WHAT makes a roti canai different from another? Is it the flour or the curry?
Apparently the nationality of the hand that flips it is of great importance too.
And a Rohingya roti canai seller in Kelantan found out this truth the hard way when he was confronted by local vigilantes who were of the strong opinion that migrants have no business doing business in Malaysia.
The video, shared on X, has since attracted a good deal of attention on the cyberspace.

As usual, some netizens expressed their concern that local traders were being pushed aside, while others questioned how a foreign national could operate a food stall in the first place.
Apparently, the humble roti canai is no longer just a breakfast staple.
It is now a matter of economic sovereignty, national identity and, judging by the outrage, who has the right to stretch a ball of dough until it becomes a flying saucer.
Should a simple roti canai stall be turned into a public courtroom?
But it appears the situation is not so simple. Take it from netizen @caridove111 who lamented that these migrants were stealing the hearts of the local women too.
Also, several netizens pointed out the troubling development that local businesses are the ones employing the migrants.
Talk about a plot twist. According to @scopio12341 , these migrants are even wearing hijab and kopiah to appear less conspicuous.
“Kelantan is being colonised,” added @DirikuEgo while @Ierc_Junior suggested people check the stalls in Langkawi too.
Then there was @ziLbiskuT lamenting that soon, the Rohingya should be allowed to vote.
In a country where roti canai can trigger a debate over sovereignty, romance and voting rights, the only thing more stretched than the dough is the imagination.
As for the roti canai made by the poor Rohingya migrant, it may be crispy, but the debate surrounding it is considerably harder to digest. —Oct 13, 2026
