Simunjan records 98.5 pct telecom coverage amid internet disruptions

By Noor Syahhira Hady · 13 Oct, 10:19 MYT

SIMUNJAN recorded 98.5 per cent settlement-based telecommunications coverage despite frequent internet disruptions and service gaps in some areas.

Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication I (Telecommunication) Datuk Liwan Lagang said the figure was recorded as of October 2026.

He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was looking into measures to improve connectivity under the second phase of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative.

“MCMC is currently examining suitable sites for JENDELA Phase 2 in Sarawak, including Simunjan, to identify appropriate solutions to improve and expand telecommunications coverage,” he said.

He was responding to Awla Dris (GPS-Simunjan) during question-and-answer session on Tuesday (Oct 13).

On the implementation timeline, he said the initiative was scheduled to enter its next stage in 2027.

“The first batch of JENDELA Phase 2 is scheduled to be implemented in the first quarter of 2027,” he said.

Liwan also outlined how the public could assess internet service quality through a mobile application.

“Members of the public can use the MCMC Nexus mobile application, which can be downloaded onto mobile devices, to check internet quality and performance in real time.

“The results of these checks are automatically recorded in the system for further examination and follow-up action by MCMC,” he said.
