Spotify Opens Tech Resources to Outside Development Teams
The site builds on the company’s existing products like Backstage, Portal, Confidence and Xirp, per the post.
“They were always designed to work as a system,” Tyson Singer, senior vice president of technology and platform at Spotify, wrote the post. “Now they live under one roof, and we have more to share.
“I get asked a version of this question every day: Why is Spotify in the business of selling software?” Singer added. “The truth is, the Spotify you know and love is more than a great streaming service. Behind our consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code day in, day out.”

The squads are responsible for ensuring Spotify’s 777 million monthly active users can access their music, podcasts and audiobooks, something that “demands best-in-class engineering and tools,” the post said. Spotify made sure it could address that demand by building these tools themselves.
“And it goes well beyond developer tooling,” Singer wrote in the post. “Spotify Technology covers the full product development lifecycle, from idea to impact. Alongside it sits the media technology we’ve built for our own needs. And, at our scale, all of it has to run cost-effectively, which is an engineering discipline in its own right.”
While AI has made building software faster, the process isn’t necessarily simpler — “the complexity, the cost and the operational surface area all grow with it,” the post said. There’s also a “deeper shift” beyond just speed, as “AI makes forgetting expensive.”
“Without shared memory, teams and agents re-learn what the organization already knows, rebuild what’s already been built, and retest ideas that have already been tested, now at machine speed,” Singer wrote in the post.
AI has compounded problems the company has dealt with for years, but the tooling and systems Spotify has built have allowed it to stay ahead, according to the post.
It’s not clear how much revenue Spotify’s enterprise sales are bringing in, as the company hasn’t included those numbers in its financial reporting, TechCrunch reported Thursday (Oct. 8).
“That could potentially change as Spotify makes a more concerted push into the enterprise market, turning what was once a side business into a more formal operation,” the report said.
