“There are so many people in my life, friends, and people that I’ve worked with that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends,” Styles said.
After asking the audience if he could perform the song, Styles picked up his guitar and began singing the heartfelt track.
One of its lyrics, “ You dance until you’re tired,” became a particularly emotional moment for fans. Videos of the performance soon circulated on social media, with fans sharing their reactions.
A Message About Grief And Looking After Each Other
Alongside the tribute, Styles also shared a meaningful message about losing someone and supporting those around us.
“I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other,” he told the crowd.
Styles had previously opened up about losing Payne during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in March.
He spoke about how difficult it was to grieve someone privately when so many people around the world were also mourning the same person. He also shared that he had come to see living life fully as one way of honouring the friends he had lost.
