PUSA : Tandang Sari Regatta has the potential to become a major tourism attraction that introduces Pusa to visitors from other districts and outside Sarawak, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the event could serve as a platform to showcase the heritage, culture and identity of the local community while creating economic opportunities for small traders and local businesses.
Abang Johari said he hoped the regatta could be complemented by promotions of traditional food, local produce, handicrafts and cultural activities to maximise its benefits for the community.
“In this way, the benefits of the event will not only be enjoyed by the race participants, but also by small traders, food operators and the local community,” he said in his speech at the launching of the 3rd edition of Regatta Tandang Sari, Pusa 2026 here on Saturday.
His text-of-speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Abang Johari stressed that safety, cleanliness, visitor management and the overall quality of event organisation must be given due attention to ensure the regatta continues to grow.
A positive visitor experience, he said, would encourage people to return and help establish Pusa’s reputation as an attractive tourism destination.
Beyond tourism, Abang Johari said the regatta also instilled important values such as teamwork, discipline and determination.
He noted that success in boat racing depended on every team member working together, understanding their respective roles and moving towards a common goal.
“These values should be practised in our community life. Although we come from different backgrounds, mutual respect and cooperation are strengths that enable Sarawak to continue progressing in peace and harmony,” he said.
He also encouraged young people to remain actively involved in sporting, cultural and community activities, describing them as not only inheritors of tradition but also future leaders and drivers of Sarawak’s development.
