QuickCheck: Can you get a five-year international driving permit in Malaysia?

8 Oct, 21:40 MYT

AN international driving permit (IDP) that you can use for five years seems like a good idea.

According to reports, certain parties are offering IDPs that have a validity period of five years to foreigners for RM500.

Is this a real deal?

Verdict:

FALSE

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) said such documents being offered by unscrupulous individuals do not meet the recognition requirements for driving legally in Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said the IDP issued by JPJ has a one-year validity period based on the Convention on Road Traffic, Geneva, Sept 19, 1949 and its use is subject to the laws of the respective country or territory.

"A document bearing the words 'International Driving Permit' does not automatically grant a person the right to drive in Malaysia. The document must be issued by an authority and meet the recognition requirements applicable in this country," said Hamidi in a statement on Thursday (Oct 8).

He reminded foreigners not to be deceived by parties offering international driving documents without proper authority or recognition.
