Comprehensive federal proposals target flying doctor safety

By Sharifah Nong Jasima · 20 Oct, 20:58 MYT

THE federal government is drafting comprehensive proposals to improve operational safety, aircraft suitability and personnel welfare for the Flying Doctor Service (FDS), said Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said the proposed improvements aim to ensure the service’s long-term safety and effectiveness after its temporary suspension following a recent incident.

“To ensure long-term safety and effectiveness, comprehensive proposals are currently being drafted to upgrade operational safety, air asset suitability and personnel welfare by the Federal Government,” he said in response to the assemblyman for Ba’kelalan in his ministerial winding-up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting today (Oct 20).

Dr Sim said 69 of the 85 localities served by FDS were now accessible via off-road or river routes, leaving 16 entirely dependent on air transport.

“The federal government aimed to ensure equitable, consistent and uninterrupted access to healthcare across all affected regions.

“Moving forward, mobile healthcare delivery will adapt to ongoing infrastructure improvements, shifting to land routes as the Sarawak Government expands road connectivity,” he said.
