KUCHING: Personal memories, familiar places and cultural traditions will take centre stage at PechaKucha Kuching Volume 12, bringing Sarawak’s heritage closer to the public through visual storytelling.
Themed ‘The Power of 20’, the event will be held at Theatre Hotel here on October 17 (coming Saturday) in conjunction with the Sarawak Heritage Society’s (SHS) 20th anniversary.
Organised in collaboration with SHS, it will feature 13 speakers, including society president, Datin Rosemarie Wong-Jabu, sharing stories centred on heritage, culture and preservation.
Each speaker will present 20 images for 20 seconds each, allowing them to tell their story in six minutes and 40 seconds.
According to a statement, the format offers audiences an accessible way to explore how heritage extends beyond historical buildings to include everyday experiences, community identities and connections to places.
Over the past two decades, SHS has promoted heritage awareness through its Heritage Speaker Series, visits, research, documentation and advocacy for places of heritage value.
Its documentation efforts have included the Red Bridge at Kampung Seropak, the Old Nurses’ Quarters and, more recently, Tegora Mercury Mine in Bau.
Founded in 2006, the independent, registered non-profit organisation relies on community support to sustain its work in safeguarding Sarawak’s tangible and intangible heritage.
The programme will begin with networking and a buffet dinner at 6:15 pm, followed by presentations at 8:20 pm.
SHS members can attend for RM30, including dinner, while an RM80 package for non-members includes dinner and a one-year SHS membership.
Admission for those attending only the presentations is RM30.
Registration is open, with further information available through Sarawak Heritage Society’s Facebook and Instagram pages or by contacting 018-7802006.
