BINTULU : Muaythai could help instil discipline and curb bullying among students if its training is accompanied by lessons in responsibility and respect.
Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said the combat sport offered more than physical exercise, as it could help young people develop self-control and understand the responsibility that came with learning martial arts.
“I hope muaythai training can be introduced in schools because the sport not only provides good physical exercise but also teaches students discipline.
“I do not want to see them misuse the skills they learn to bully others or settle conflicts in school,” he said.
Pang was speaking to reporters during the 10th edition of the Muaythai Premier Sarawak Cup at NAIM Street Mall Paragon on Friday night (Oct 16).
He stressed that martial arts skills must be used responsibly and should never become a means of intimidating others or settling personal conflicts.
Pang also pointed to Sarawak’s success at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), where the state emerged as the overall muaythai champion with five gold medals, as evidence of its ability to produce high-level athletes.
He hoped the achievement would inspire more young people to take up the sport, develop their abilities, and represent Sarawak in future competitions.
